Ryan and I just got back from a night out on the town. We drove downtown Kansas City to eat at a restaurant that claims to have the best BLT in the world. They weren't lying. How did I never think to add a fried egg to my BLT? I've eaten very well all week and exercised every day, so I gave myself the night off and did some serious indulging. We also went to an awesome movie theater to see the new Pirates movie in 3D. We reserved seats ahead of time in the "Cinema Suites," which have red, leather recliners for each movie-watcher, and personal waiters that bring delicious treats, refill drinks, give warm towels and pass out Ghiradelli chocolate. I will never go to a "normal" theater again after being that spoiled!
Here are some pictures of our activities the past couple weeks. The first ones were taken at the now-infamous Temper Tantrum Hell night, Brevan's band concert. It's too bad Logan was not on his best behavior, because the Middle School concert was actually quite impressive. Brevan played the trombone all year, but has decided to take piano lessons again and give up on band for now.
This is Brevan with two of the other Deacons in our ward, Tanner Steele and Clayton Adams. How handsome are these future missionaries?
The next couple pictures were taken the night of the school carnival where Brynlie had to run a booth. I have to admit that I'm pretty darn proud of the partition and fishing pole I created. I would have taken more pictures but . . .oh that's right, I was too busy being awesome and running the booth for my darling daughter.
These pictures were taken during the Field Day activities at the elementary school. After about an hour of fun outside, the sky opened up and the kids (and volunteers) all got soaked. The games were moved inside, and I snapped a few pictures during "Duck Duck Goose." I let Logan participate in all the activities with the big kids, because I figure I'm a package deal when I volunteer.
Logan "goosed" Lindsey and had her chase him around the circle!
I just had to include this picture, because I've never seen anything sweeter.
The next few pictures were taken at the last Upbeat Choir performance. It's so fun to have both my girls in the singing group now. They always sing such fun, interesting songs, and their next performance is at a large venue called Kidfest, where there will be hundreds of people watching them!
Brenda always teaches the kids to use fun instruments, like these boom whackers and kazoos.
I took these photos at noon on Tuesday, when a Missouri storm rolled in. The hail was pounding the house so hard, I thought the windows were going to break. This storm had me a bit worried after the horrible devastation that occurred in Joplin, Missouri this past week. I'm much more spooked now that there's recent proof of Mother Nature's power.
And these pictures were taken on Wednesday, after I checked the kids out of school because another major storm was coming to town. Brynlie had been very upset the day before when she was required to go to the bottom level of the school and duck her head between her legs for 20 minutes as they rode out the storm. I had a strong feeling on Wednesday that I should pick up my kids in the mid-morning, just in case the storm turned out to be decent like the previous day. I'm so glad I did. Tornadoes starting touching ground all over the metro, including two small ones that touched down in Kearney, very close to where their schools are located. I've never been too scared during the tornado warnings, but the Joplin tornado is so fresh in my mind that I was pretty terrified. We were put under a tornado warning, sirens were blaring, and the storm was obviously getting worse. I had the kids grab some snacks and fun activities to do in the basement while I watched the news broadcasts. When I realized the funnel clouds were headed straight for us, I made the kids take their activities into the storage room and we huddled together. I realized two things while in there: the glass bottling jars need to be stored differently so they don't become weapons in a tornado, and I want us all to have bike helmets to wear in case of a major tornado. It was about an hour before we could safely come out of the storage room and access any damage.
The area around us fared very well. We had items blown all over the yard, large pools of water, and many tree limbs down in the city. Nothing compared to what larger wind storms and tornadoes can do.
I went to check on our old house, which we still own. The rental agreement says the family won't own a trampoline, but they recently put one up, and it went airborne in the storm. The fence is broken and the trampoline was found a few houses away. Looks like we will be giving a lecture about following our rules if they want to continue to live in the house.
We are feeling very blessed after witnessing Mother Nature's temper tantrum. The news coming out of Joplin is so heart-breaking, and we are involved in donating items to help in the recovery efforts. There's nothing like a natural disaster to make me stop whining and be grateful.
