Crash and Burn

We had quite a traumatic evening yesterday.  Ryan and I were in the basement when the kids were getting ready for bed, and Logan had just run upstairs, swinging his play sword in every direction.  Suddenly we heard a big thump, waited a few seconds to see if we heard crying, then ran as quickly as possible when the crying was more like a blood-curdling scream.  Logan had fallen down the upper stairs, and hit his head on the metal railing.  It was not a pretty sight, and I did not remain very calm.  Good thing Ryan was home to be the level-headed one.  While the older kids cried, we put Logan in the truck to rush him to the ER.  After leaving our neighborhood, we had the thought to stop by our neighbor's house to have Josh (a.k.a. awesome neighbor doctor who has helped us out more times than I can count) give us his opinion on whether the wound needed stitches.  After getting out his handy military kit (Josh is a military doctor who just returned from Iraq last October), he determined that with liquid bandage, gauze, butterfly closures and a little luck, we could get by without paying the $200 copay at the ER (thank you for the insurance raise, Obama).  I happened to have my camera with me, since I had just finished taking pictures at Logan's soccer game (see post below), so I snapped a picture of him after the bleeding slowed and we got him a bit cleaned up.
After a couple hours, we headed back home to our upset children.  We had the poor baby sleep with us, so we could keep a close eye on him.  I'm glad we did, because there were a few times in the night where we noticed Logan's wound had bled so badly that he was lying in a pool of blood.
Since the wound didn't seem to be healing as we had planned, I took him to the our actual doctor this morning.  It was determined that he could either get stitches (which would be very traumatic because the doctor's office doesn't have "laughing gas" like the ER does) or it could be cinched tightly with steristrips and stuff similar to super-glue.  We chose the second option, and are hoping Logan doesn't have to deal with a large scar for the rest of his life.  If he does, he has a big brother and big sister (Brynlie) who can console him since they have very similar scars from similar experiences.  Logan's cut was right on his eyebrow though, so the doctor thinks the scar will hide nicely.  Since Logan was such a brave boy at the doctor's office, we picked up Dominick (Logan's best friend, who is pictured in the background because he didn't want to get his picture taken) and got ice cream at a local shop.  It's amazing how ice cream can make everything better.
