Tidbits

Believe it or not, we actually have done other things in the past couple months besides go on vacation. First off, here a few recent quotes from my kids that made me giggle:

We have conversations with Brevan every day about his language.  Most parents are probably telling their teenage sons to speak more like an adult, but we are telling Brevan to speak more like a teenager.  He has always been our "little professor" who uses big language, but it's reached a new level where he uses random words in the wrong context, such as the other day when he told me I was "objectifying" him. When he wrote an essay last week, Ryan and I had to help him correct most of the wording.  Our favorite line from the paper was, "I say unto you nay" after he asked a hypothetical question.  He could not understand why he should use a simple "no" when his sentence sounded much more "professional."  Oh my gosh, we laughed until our stomachs hurt.  While on our recent vacation, I asked him if he was feeling OK.  He answered that he was just feeling a bit "muLONkly."  For the life of me, I had no idea what he was saying until I realized he was trying to say melancholy.  He often uses words in strange ways because he reads them in books but doesn't know how to pronounce them. He is excited to attend his first church dance this weekend, so we have been discussing the proper way to act at a dance.  When we roll-played, he asked me very seriously, "May I have this dance, Miss?"  I told him to ask me in a less formal way, so he said "Yo, wanna dance or what?"  Then he thought it was completely appropriate to talk about the greatest scientific discoveries while dancing.  Oh boy.

While speaking about a couple being engaged, Lindsey referred to them as "Beyonce's," which she has always thought we say when speaking about fiances.

Ryan had the lucky duty of being Logan's Primary teacher for a day.  I was supposed to get the opportunity, but ended up getting sick.  Later that day I asked Logan what Daddy had taught him in church, knowing that the lesson had been about Joseph Smith.  Logan was very excited to tell me all he learned, such as "Jophes Smift took plates from a magician and wrooted them to normal." Uhhhh, what?  He explained the magician part with, "You know, because the magician had wrooted on plates in Magiptian, so Jophes wrooted the words into the normal way."  After some investigating, I figured out Logan was trying to tell me the plates had been written in Egyptian, so Joseph translated them into English.  I just about busted a gut laughing so hard.

Other little tidbits of our lives:

While driving to Texas on our vacation, Ryan and I realized we were both drinking Cranberry juice, wearing our most comfortable pants that have stretchy waistbands, bird-watching because we were fascinated with the many varieties, listening to NPR on the radio, and complaining about the aches we felt in our bodies.  Suddenly, Ryan looked over at me and said, "OH MY GOSH, we are officially OLD!  And I would give anything for a juicy grapefruit right now!"  Yep, tomorrow is my birthday and I'm getting old.

My Mama retired last week, after spending most of her adult life in the workforce.  She was lucky to love her job, so she worked until she felt like her job was hindering her ability to do the things she loves most.  I'm so proud of her!  My Dad, on the other hand, is expanding his therapy business.  He is in the prime position with flexible hours, because he has hired very capable therapists for his office.  My Mom said her plans for right now are "to have your Dad work and make the money that I spend!"  Sounds like a great plan to me!  She is involved in many clubs, and is looking to get more involved in volunteering somewhere in the community.

Just over three weeks ago, I downloaded the Weight Watchers app and have been very dutiful in my exercise and diet.  I've exercised for at least a half-hour 6 days a week.  I already notice some progress, and I feel great.  I have no weight loss goals, only Clothes Goals.  Goal number one was to fit into my favorite jeans (that I haven't worn in a year).  Goal accomplished!  I wore the jeans all day yesterday, and felt very proud of myself.  Goal number two is to wear a normal fitted t-shirt.  This goal will take a lot longer.  I have hope that I can accomplish this goal by summer.  For years, I have only bought shirts that are loose around my tummy.  I know it's premature to say I've made a life change, but this time feels different. I have no grand plans to run races or lose a bunch of weight.  I just want to show my kids the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, because I fell better physically and emotionally when I am taking care of myself.  Although I've tried many different programs in the past, I joined WW again because I've had the most success with it.

Brevan is participating in an experimental online blog for Apergers kids.  We drove to KC a couple weeks ago and met with the facilitator, who hopes the kids form a bond through the blog.  She is a graduate student at UMKC, and plans to work with AS kids.

MY SISTER IS COMING!  MY SISTER IS COMING!  Kara's whole family (plus Dave's mom) are driving to Missouri next month and staying with us for many days!  I'm beyond excited!

We are planning a trip to Utah this summer, where we will stay for 3-4 weeks.  Ryan has a large office in Utah, so he can work from there almost as easily as here (Shhh, don't tell our families or they will want us to move to UT, but we just love MO).  We hope to see as many friends/family members as possible, since we will be there for such an extended time.  The only plans we have so far are to be in Idaho July 28th - August 3rd.  Brevan will attend EFY at BYU-Idaho with Will Napier, while the rest of us spend more time with our favorite Yancey family!

My kids are CRAZY SMART.  Seriously, they rock.  Straight A's and perfect remarks for the three school-age kids.  The attitude of a certain oldest girl has been uncharacteristically difficult lately.  It's amazing to see the transformation into the teen years, where the eye-rolling and prickly words take center stage.

I've had hearing loss for a couple years now.  I knew it was an issue, but I never got around to seeing a doctor about the problem.  This past week I finally went in to see what was going on.  After the first peek inside my ear, I became a human experiment for all the doctors and nurses who were fascinated with my predicament.  I had HAIRY ROCKS in both my ears that were the size of earplugs.  What the heck?  Much pulling, prodding and pricking happened for the next hour until I literally felt like my head would burst.  My ears were very tender and my head was full of the water and hydrogen peroxide they had squirted.  I was extremely dizzy, so was told to use special medications and come back a few days later.  I spent the next several days trying to stay on my feet while the world seemed to spin.  I reluctantly returned to the office on Friday and had the rest of the procedure performed.  The nurses were almost giddy to pull something out of my ears that could be investigated under a microscope.  Many painful moments later, the black/green rocks were out.  I took a picture, but I will spare you the grossness of my ear's contents.  Come to find out, my ear tubes are misshapen so they don't allow particles to flow through them.  Anything that has entered my ears for the past many years was still there, calcifying into large rocks.  So totally gross.  I'm amazed how well I can hear now!  I had to plug my ears at my kid's basketball games yesterday, because the noise was overwhelming!

Speaking of basketball, Ryan had quite the memorable experience last week.  I will try to coax him into writing about it on the blog.  Also, Brynlie is incredible on the basketball court!  She was so nervous to join a team because she's never played, but that girl has heart!  She works her tiny hiney off while playing, and has even scored baskets in the past couple games.  She has definitely already surpassed me in the basketball skills department.

I'm off to enjoy my pre-birthday dinner, prepared by my awesome family.  Ryan grilled steak and veggies, while Brynlie made low-calorie cupcakes that will be paired with fat-free sherbet.  After finding out Ryan was planning to buy me a new Mac computer for my birthday, I told him to hold off for a few days.  I'm deciding between the computer (which will be so fun for organizing and editing all my pictures) and getting new furniture.  I'm addicted to the website Houzz that my Mom introduced me to several months ago.  I love to draw out plans for different areas of my house, and imagine how the space will look when finished.  I just have a hard time actually starting the process, because I'm so worried about ordering the wrong thing or changing my mind later.  Which reminds me, I repainted my kitchen yesterday and I hate the color.  Again.  Who knew blue/greens were so hard?
