Other stuff to mention

Wow, it's taken me a good portion of the day to update this blog!  8 posts, including some that are very long and detailed, makes me happy but I'm tired of sitting at this computer desk!

Since I'm always the photographer, this the only random picture I could find of myself . . .haha.  My Mom took this photo while she was in town.  Before I explain the strange picture, I would like to say that this is now my new motivation to get my ever-increasing hiney on the treadmill.  Ugh.  Why didn't anyone tell me I look like this from behind?

Now, the real reason for the picture.  I hired a professional home decorator to come over and help me resolve some of my current house questions.  The main floor family room bothers me because the TV is in an awkward place, the kitchen needs a daring color on the walls, but most importantly I need help designing the basement.  The project of re-doing our basement has overwhelmed me, not only because the area is so large, but because I'm trying to incorporate 3 styles in the same space:  media room, game room and classy family room for entertaining.  This lady gave me some great ideas and got my mind rolling on how and where to begin.

In other news, my White Trash van has now become even trashier.  I put the seats in the ground and let my kids (and the neighborhood kids) jump in and out while trick-or-treating last night.  Since the homes in our neighborhood are so spread out, I decided to drive them between houses.  I left the trunk open the whole time so they could easily get in after each house.  After dropping off the Napier kids, Brynlie, Lindsey and Logan were still in the trunk when I drove into the garage . . . with the trunk still open.  There was a sudden crashing noise, and the kids started screaming.  As I realized they were being rained on with thousands of shards of glass, I was terrified.  I started screaming for Ryan's help (he had stayed home to pass out candy at our door), thinking I had seriously damaged my children.  It was one of the scariest moments of my life.  Ryan helped the kids carefully get out of the van and explained to me that windshields are tempered so the pieces won't cut people badly when they shatter.  I was still shaking so badly I couldn't function, but after seeing that the kids were ok, I called Christine and borrowed a ShopVac.  It took the kids quite a while to stop crying while Ryan, Brevan and I started cleaning up the mess.  Last night my prayers were full of gratitude for keeping my babies safe.  The windshield is getting fixed tomorrow, so in the meantime I've had some very strange looks as I drive around town.  I'm thinking the time is drawing close when I will trade in this van for something a bit newer and larger, but every time I get close to car shopping I feel like there are more important places to use our money.

So continuing on with the comedy that is my life, I had an embarrassing moment yesterday.  I left the house with 8 errands on my to-do list that needed to be done in the next 90 minutes.  One of the first things I needed to do was buy make-up for Brynlie's Halloween costume.  She dressed up as an 80's girl, so I stopped by the store and bought the brightest turquoise and hot pink make-up I could find.  I then continued on with the rest of my errands, including dropping off a baby gift to someone in our ward who just had a baby.   I don't know her very well, so I left the present on her doorstep when she didn't come to the door quickly.  By the time I got to the Elementary School for the Halloween parties, I was frantically searching the van for the make-up but couldn't find it anywhere.  Brynlie was disappointed that she didn't have any make-up to apply, and I promised her I had bought it but could not figure out where it was.  About an hour later, a thought occurred to me, so I sent the following text.

Me:  This is definitely the weirdest text I've ever sent, but I left a bag on your porch today with a baby outfit inside.  About that same time, I misplaced the Halloween make-up I was going to use on my daughter today.  Any way I accidentally dropped it in the gift bag?  If so, I'm officially humiliated.

Erica:  Haha don't feel humiliated.  I did think it was a little different but still thoughtful of you!

Me:  OK, I'm so embarrassed!  As dumb as I feel, that's pretty funny that you thought I bought you crappy BRIGHT colored make-up as a baby present!

Erica:  Don't be embarrassed!  I think it's so funny!  Especially the super bright lipstick!!!

Haha, I'm such a fool.

I was released from my calling in Young Womens on Sunday, and I have to admit I'm feeling a bit lost.  In my 17 years of adult life, I have served in Primary or YW almost exclusively, besides the year I was the Activities Chairperson.  I've always loved serving as a Visiting Teacher, in fact I would say it's my favorite calling because I  love the interaction and personal relationships I get to form, but I've never had an actual Relief Society calling.  I always thought being the Compassionate Service Leader would be an amazing calling, because of the neat service involved, so I guess I will find out because that's my new calling.  I've already been busy cooking meals, visiting an elderly lady in the hospital and helping a family who is moving into our ward in a few weeks.  I really think I will love this calling, but it's going to take some getting used to on Sundays when I have to sit through lessons for the entire 3 hours.  That sounds awful, but I would much rather be busy and involved than just sitting.  Luckily there are a plethora of cute babies in our ward, so I steal one or two every Sunday.  I go through withdrawals when I'm not able to snuggle a baby at least once a week!

Well, Hurricane Sandy did it's best to end my trip to New York, but as for now we are still going!  The airports are almost functioning normally, but the local transportation is an absolute mess.  We will plan to take good walking shoes and possibly a canoe in order to make our way around town!  I just hope the hotel gets power before then . . .

Another interesting moment this week was on Tuesday, when I taught preschool at my house.  I was in charge of the whole Halloween party, and had only planned for 5 kids to be here, since one mom was very clear about the fact that they don't celebrate Halloween.  I was quite surprised when the child was dropped off, even though she wasn't allowed to dress up.  I didn't want to offend the mom in any way with the activities I had planned, but I also hadn't bought enough of everything!  I had only purchased 5 masks to paint, 5 Bingo boards, etc.  I had to get creative very quickly, but I don't think the kids noticed I was frantically changing plans.

Our whole family visited Children's Mercy Hospital on Monday, because a sweet little girl on Lindsey's soccer team is there with a horrible case of pneumonia.  Poor thing.  While there, I was once again reminded of how much I would enjoy being a nurse.  For some reason I'm having a hard time making the final decision about what degree to get and when is the best time to return to school.

Tomorrow is my first baby's 14th birthday!  I just might have a little surprise in store for him!
