Wednesday night was crazy busy, as most of my evenings are. I loaded all the kids in the van to run to the grocery store and buy a treat for the scouts before going to the church. I'm the cub scout den leader and we had a service project activity. Ryan was leaving to go with the elders to Liberty Jail with an investigator family.
Let me start by explaining that I am usually not such a horrible mom. I usually have Brevan and Brynlie in the backseat of the van, and Logan and Lindsey are buckled into their carseats in the middle. But lately Ryan takes out the carseats EVERY MORNING so he can drive teenagers to high school after he teaches them seminary. It's very annoying to put the carseats back in every day! So I always put Logan's back in, but I've gotten a bit lazy with Lindsey's carseat, and often just buckle her into a seatbelt.
Back to the story . . .I was in a big hurry and didn't check to make sure everyone had gotten buckled in before taking off. Brynlie chose to sit in the middle row by Logan, and Lindsey was in back by Brevan. As I headed out of the neighborhood, I suddenly saw something in the road right in front of me. It was completely dark outside and took me a few seconds to realize there were two deer running across the street. I slammed on my brakes and missed the first deer, but hit the second one. I was shaken up, worrying about both the car and deer, when I heard Lindsey SCREAM. I realized that she had not put her seatbelt on yet and had been thrown all the way to the front passenger seat. She had a golfball size bruise on her head that was swelling bigger by the second. I quickly checked the car (and watched the deer hobble away) and drove back home. I caught Ryan before he left and had him take a good look at Lindsey. He was worried about her getting a concussion, so he stayed home with her while I went to the church.
My poor girl! She's doing better, but I'm never exactly sure how to explain the situation when someone (such as her preschool teachers) ask about her huge bruise. "Ummm, we hit a deer, and . . .Lindsey hit her head." Ya, I feel like a big loser mom.

Sounds like something any of us would do. At least she is okay. When Mason ran into the wall last week and half of his face was swollen I worried that his teachers would ask me what happened but no one said a word to me. Maybe they are just watching me a little closer from now on!
Don't worry. Back in the day we used to drive from California to Utah without our seatbelts on. We were getting close to my cousin's house late one night when my mom slammed on the brakes for a cat, results in a lovely fat lip for me.
I wonder what people think about all the bruises my kids get (especially Brooke). Sometimes her legs look like I take a baseball bat to them. ;)
Well, now that Cupid can no longer fly the sleigh will not be able to get off the ground and millions of children all over the world will not have a Christmas. HAHA!
I guess people would be appalled to know that when I was a kid we would STAND UP in the back seat on the way over to church. Or that we would drive from Southern California to Idaho in a VW van that had NO seatbelts and just big cushions we made forts out of all the way there and back...boy times have changed. I do have to thank you for making sure all the presents got wrapped. Wednesday was quite a day! =)
Yikes! No fun for anyone. Glad everyone is all right. And I would have just loved to see you riding in a shopping cart! You're girls will remember that forever!
You are NOT a loser Mom first of all! We've all been there (maybe not in the hitting a deer) but I'm just so glad that she was alright and no MAJOR damage was done. How's your car doing?
