Somehow, I've become the mother of a teenager. Not sure how that's possible since I'm only 21. I realized on the evening before Brevan's birthday (November 1st) that it had been exactly 15 years since Ryan proposed to me. Then the next day, Brevan's birthday, would be the beginning of 15 years of raising teenagers. How exciting, sad, unbelievable and scary to begin a new chapter of life. Heaven help me make it through the next 15 years in one piece. I haven't decided if those moms who tell me they "LOVED" raising teenagers are lying or if their teenagers wore them down so badly that they lost all common sense. Either way, I hope it's a grand, adventurous ride!
On Brevan's birthday, last Wednesday the 2nd, I let him play hookie from school and hang out with me. I dropped the girls off at school, took Logan to a friend's house to play for the day, and headed into Kansas City with my 13-year-old. First stop was Barnes and Noble. Oh how I love that my Brevan wanted to hang out in the bookstore for many hours. Nothing quite compares to the smell when you walk into that store - steaming hot chocolate wafting from the cafe, mixed with starch white pages of brand-new books waiting to be explored. Ahhh, it's paradise. See one of those little windows on the second level of the store? I sat at a small table under one of those windows for over an hour while I drank my hot chocolate and snacked on muffins. Brevan bought himself several books, including The Scarlett Letter, The Last of the Mohicans, and and The Arabian Nights. I bought Jane Eyre and some Christmas presents. I guess me and my boy were really in the mood for classics that day.
After the bookstore, we walked around the corner to the Apple Store, where we worked on getting Brevan's phone fixed. I had never been in the Apple Store before, so it was thoroughly impressive! I'm not a techie, but it was a whole lot of fun to play on their Macs. I could not believe how crowded the store was in the middle of a workday.
After picking up Logan, we headed to a favorite Mexican restaurant for a late lunch. Then Brevan chose homemade hamburgers and fries for dinner. Our present to Brevan was the new Windows operating system that allows him to create games and make fancy Power Point presentations. He got books from both sets of grandparents, and then handed out presents to the rest of the family, which he had purchased earlier in the week. He hadn't yet given Lindsey, Brynlie or Ryan their birthday presents, so he promised them a gift before his birthday . . .haha! He got Ryan and iTunes gift card, and new Moxie dolls for both the girls.
One of my children actually let me make them a cake! That's unusual, since they always want to pick out a decorated cake at the bakery. I researched some recipes before making Brevan this chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I assume it was good, but never actually tried it since Brevan's birthday it two days after Halloween, when the thought of sugar makes me sick. Here he is making a wish and blowing the candles!
One day while eating dinner, we decided to have Brevan and Brynlie's birthday parties on the same day - 11/11/11 - pretty cool day for a party, right? It was perfect since school got out 2 hours early and Lindsey was already attending another birthday party for her friend. Brevan invited 5 of his buddies from church, and Ryan took them (and Logan) to a place called Maze Craze. They went through James Bond-like laser mazes, mirror mazes, and played a hardcore game of laser tag. Before taking off, they sat down to enjoy cupcakes at the table I'd already decorated for Brynlie's party. It was pretty funny to see a bunch of teenage boys huddled around a tablecloth that said "Another year of FABULOUS!" all over it.
I just love each one of these boys. They are such good friends and wonderful examples to my son. From left to right: Clayton C., Will, Tanner, Clayton A., Brevan and Shane (who just joined the church a few months ago).
