Shock

A couple days ago, the 5th graders had their first school dance experience. When Brevan got up in the morning, he spent TIME figuring out what to wear. He walked out of his bedroom in a sporty-looking black outfit, with a gray jacket on top. Then . . .this is the real shocker . . .he ASKED me if I thought he looked good. When I said I thought the outfit looked very nice, he said, "good. I want to look nice at the dance today, so Emma might want to dance with me. She really likes when I wear this jacket."

There are so many shocking things about this interaction, that it's definitely blog-worthy.

1. He has never once cared if his clothes matched or "looked good." Ever. This is the boy who would (and has, when I haven't been paying attention) wear the same clothes for days on end.

2. He picked out a very nice looking outfit!

3. He CARED (and remembered!) when Emma said she liked how he looked in a certain jacket.

4. He WANTED to not only attend the dance, but possibly dance with Emma. Before this encounter, I was half expecting a phone call from the school, telling me that Brevan was overwhelmed with all the chaos of the dance.

And here's the rest of the story: He not only attended the whole dance, but he DANCED. There were no slow dances (thank heaven, my boy IS only 11!) but Brevan WON the cha-cha dance contest. AND the hula-hooping contest! AND he had a blast!
