So apparently I'm a really bad mom because I haven't taken my kids to the zoo in several years. If I'm being completely honest, I think zoos are a bit boring. Every once in a while an animal actually shows off for the guests, but usually they are lying in the shade somewhere, almost completely out of sight, and I'm thinking, "I could have learned more about the animals by reading about them in a book." Lame, I know. But the kids (minus Brevan, who adamantly refused to go with us) wanted to go, so I planned a day and we went.
And we had so much fun! The polar bears were my favorite! One of the bears was doing flips and swimming up to the glass to see us. The day was perfect until about 3:00, when we had already been there for 4 hours. We decided to see just a couple more things, but the temperature was now in the 90's and we were all running out of steam. While looking at the gorillas at the very back of the park, I cut my foot pretty badly. I had to sit down and have the kids run to a nearby booth to get me a bandaid. They didn't have one, so the girl called someone to bring them to me. We waited 15 minutes and then she called again. Then we waited another 15 minutes and she called again. Finally I was so annoyed that me and the kids got on the Skyride to head to the other First Aid booth, where I was promised there would be bandaids. There wasn't. In fact, no one was actually at the booth. The nearest worker blew me off and said it was time for her shift to end. I was a sweaty mess with a bloody foot, and my kids were quickly falling apart. I walked up to a group of workers and explained my predicament. They rolled their eyes (seriously!) and finally one of them got up to find a bandaid in a nearby restaurant. The whole time she was gone, the rest of the girls grumbled about how the tram wasn't working so they would have to wait until the zoo guests all got a ride before they would be able to catch a tram. I was pretty ticked off by this point. Nothing can get me riled up like horrible customer service. We finally made it back to the car after waiting for a tram. My kids were troopers.
The manager of the zoo will be receiving a letter from me this week. I'm not someone who complains often, but I was so surprised at how ill-equipped the zoo employees were when it came to helping me with an injury. Good thing Lindsey didn't crack her head open again while jumping across large rocks while at the zoo. The crazy kid would have bled to death while the workers rolled their eyes at us.
Aside from the last hour, we had a great time! Next time we won't stay longer than 4 hours and I will wear better shoes. :)
This goat kept trying to eat Lindsey's skirt! It was the funniest thing!
